Never thought I would say I'm having trouble with distributor but this one has got me stumped. I have tried several things but could use some help so here me out. M farmall hasn't run for a couple years but it ran when I parked it. Decided it was about time to get it going again. Done all the checking and preparing before I tried to start it but wound up without any spark. After doing a spark test on 1 of the spark plugs I checked spark at the coil wire. Didn't have spark there either. Got out the test light and I had juice to the coil, through the coil and to the points. My first thought was that it might be a bad coil or condenser. I have an H farmall that runs fine. Both tractors have Delco Remy distributors so I took coil and condenser off the H and put them on the M. Still didn't have any spark. Then I thought maybe I was checking spark with a bad plug or a bad wire so I used a different plug and a wire off the H that I knew was good. Still no spark. So then I thought maybe I lost juice or the ground to the plug so I got out the test light again and still had juice to the points and used it to check to see if the plug was grounded and it was. Still no spark. I looked at the points to check them out. Made sure they were closing and checked the gap. They were working fine and didn't look corroded. If I remember right I just put new ones in not long before I quit using the tractor and replaced the condenser as well. Both tractors are 12 volt to the starter and has one of those reducer downer to 6 volt deals before it gets to the coil. Not sure if the distributor cap and rotor are good but by checking spark right out of the coil that should eliminate a problem in the cap or rotor. any help would be appriciated. I don't do the e-mail thing so a message right here at this message will do just fine. Thanks alot. One other thing. When the tractor was parked the battery was taken out and put in something else.

Thanks for the follow ups. They were all good ones. I found my problem and turns out it was the points. They didn't look bad at all but since I took them out to get a closer look I went ahead and rubbed them over a file. Put them back in and had plenty of spark out of the coil wire then. plugged coil wire in cap and checked a plug wire for spark and it was good to go. Put all wires on the plugs and the old M fired right up. Then I had the burden of switching all the parts back to the right tractor. I had to have the little H so it would run too. Thanks for the help you all. I am from Ks too.

Bill,

I spent several hours working to fix a similar problem with my SM a couple years ago. After trying many different changes and checks, I finally realized the insulated post which connects the points to the coil was grounded to the housing on the inside. Once I cleared the ground, everything was back to normal. I must have allowed the bolt to turn when the nut on the outside was tightened. Check to see if this has happened to you. Good luck.

Pull the center wire out of the distributor and hold it near a ground while cranking. If it sparks there, then the coil, points and condenser and center wire (from coil to distributor) are good. If no spark, check those items. If you do get spark, then it is possible that the distributor cap has a crack, or carbon trail inside that is grounding your spark from the center post so that no plug gets any fire. Or plug wires or plugs. Worse case solution is to shot gun it and replace cap, rotor, wires, plugs, points and condenser, which is probably a good thing to do every so often anyway. Good luck and post what you find.

"They were working fine and didn't look corroded."

Bill with the distributor cap off, turn on the ignition and see if those points are sparking. You did not mention if they were sparking or not. They should show a very strong spark. If not, remove them and file the point surfaces. I have that problem on my Hs at the farm because the barn is slightly damp. The points get a JD green corrosion on them.

You checked about everything.

You'd better change the points. Are they grounded good?

My worst frustration has been checking with a bad plug. I know you said you took a plug out of the running H, you might try a different one.
