I am looking to purchase my first tractor? I have a lead on a 1953 IH 140 it's selling for $1900 with front push blade for snow and 6' finish belly mower/brush hog it has PTO. The owner states that it does not have live PTO but has a lever that disengages the mower so that it doesn't push the tractor almost sounds like live PTO to me! Owner states he's not really a knowledgeable tractor person either. The blade is hydraulic and has three blades. The belly mower is able to cut from about 4" to 10" high. I would like to put a front-end loader on it for light landscaping can this be done? Does any body have any information that they can offer? I would like to now where I can find specifics like horsepower and other technical information on this tractor. How does this compare to a Ford 8N or Ford 600.

Thanks for you help

Bob,
Grab that tractor fast!.. That is a great price for a great tractor. But don't count on finding a bucket. They are rare and when you can find one are more expensive than the tractor.

I got a 59 #140. Have disk, plow, blade, corn cultivator, planter, IH#10 (very wide) seed drill, model 46 IH baler (untried with the 140 in the field ), front and rear cultivators, and I would not take $5k for it. It is really a great little tractor. I want to get an "M" to handle the baler and some other heavier plowing.

Wengers in PA has everything you want including the front end loader. Frieght will be more than the implement so be warned.

good luck on your new tractor

if it,s a 140 it will be some were in the mid 50,s for year 57-58 and on up.i just got a 130 the model before that one and it,s a little monster just broke up 15 acer,s with it bush hoged it first then plowed then disked it, and the tractor ran great, the lever for the pto is under the left hand side of the seat and you can throw it out of gear real easy, the tractor has a 1 point hitch with all the equipment for it,i gave 4100.00 for the whole works, it also has a woods belly mower but i find the bush hog with it works just fine in heavy never tilled field, ran it in first gear and it worked great.

I don't know that much about these things but my father has an International 140 with a single point hitch and he would like to purchase a 5' bush hog for it. Any ideas on where to get such an item at a reasonable price? Also what is a reasonable price?

IH 140s were made from about 1958 until 1979. More than 20 years, so there are a lot of them around. Some changes through the years, but basically the same. If you get one for a decent price, you can buy it, use it for years and then sell it for at least what you paid for it.

If I am not mistaken the 140 Has the same L head engine as the Farmall cub. I asked a guy who restored one a while ago and he checked it out and made sure. I will stand corrected if the case may be.

The 140 has an entirely different engine than a cub, probably about twice the horsepower, two completely different tractors.

Cub has flathead engine 60 cubic inches. 140 has overhead valve engine, 123 cubic inches.

If this tractor runs reasonably well, buy it immediately and worry about the statistics later. This price is about half what those in fair condition sell for in this area. The equipment adds to the value.

Front loaders were made for the 140s, but they are not common and are hard to find. I've seen one in my travels about 20 years ago. I've seen a few pictures. The PT0 on the 140 is not a live PTO. However, you will have no trouble with a belly mower. It will work find. The 6 ft belly mower is probably made my Woods. You can do light bush hog work, but it is really meant for finish mowing. If it is a 3 blade belly mower, there is not enough inertia in the blades to worry about pushing the tractor. By hydraulic, I assume he means the tractor hydraulic system lifts the mower up and down. The 140 is about 22 PTO HP. If the tractor is in good condition, $1900 is a good price. You should have no trouble getting your money back out of it.

Woods L306A is the 6-foot belly mower for the 140.
