I just got done changing the tranny oil in my MD again, lots of water contamination. This tractor doesn't get used anywhere near enough to wear out the oil. I would like to find a gearshift boot to go over the gearshift since that seems to be where the majority of the condensation gets in. I called all the local transmission shops to see if anybody makes a rubber boot that would fit, but no luck. Any ideas? We all could probably save a lot of $$$$ on tranny oil if we could find something.

How about using an old boot from the CV joint from a front wheel drive car? We did this on an old AC 45, looks and works better than nothing, which is what is cost me.

If memory serves correctly, our Ford 8N had a rubber boot over the gearshift shaft. You might try looking for one of those.

Brian - Water accumulating the transmission does not necessarily have to come in thru the top. Around here (upstate NY), hot summer days and cool, humid nights cause a transmission to "breath" in moist air every evening as it cools down. Over the course of a summer a quart or more of condensation might show up in the tranny the size of an M - even one that's always kept under cover.

Solutions: 1 - Keep the tranny properly filled with gear lube. (A full transmission contains less air space, hence less wet air gets sucked in each evening). 2 - Drain a couple quarts (or until water stops showing) out the bottom drain opening before the onset of freezing weather in the fall. Then top off with fresh gear lube.

Bob M: Around here they call it morning-dew. The grass can be soaking wet. Of course everyone knows how much condensation happens on a real cold can of beer. Ahh.. It pays to have the tractor in an inclosed shed every nite. R

To all: May not be the prettiest part of your tractor but how about this for a fix. Take your worn out toilet plunger, (The kind with a wooden handle) and remove the handle and cut a hole vertically through the center of the plunger. Remove the gearshift knob and slide the plunger down over the gearshift so that it rests on the spring and cotter key of the shift rod. Then place an adjustable hose clamp around the part where the handle screwed in and tighten it up. Still flexible enough to allow movement of the shifter and makes a nice little "raincoat" for the housing. You may be lucky enough to have an old "red" one your bathroom that needs to be replaced right now. Good luck!//FB

I would make sure I ran the "new plunger boot" through the dishwasher to clean it off before putting it on the tractor....:)

I guess you're concerned about contaminating your tractor, the same tractor that pulls the manure spreader or cleans out the barn? Or the tractor that has a meese nest in the clutch housing or has been parked beneath the barn swallow nest in the shed?

Now that you mention it, I'd like to catch the one that roosted on the sterring wheel when I left it in the hayfield the other night!

Mrs. Red would shoot Old Rusty H if I put that 20 year old plunger through her dishwasher!

Jeez Red - Once she finished off Old Rusty I'd expect Mrs Red would be inclined to take a pot shot at you too, were she to discover the business end of a plunger in her dishwasher!

speaking of plungers, Have you ever been at a party at someones house and run out of the bathroom hollering "Where's the plunger?"
I find humor in small pranks like that.

When I was a kid, I remember dad making a temporary "boot" from a piece of inner tube. It acted more as a small "umbrella" to keep water from going down shifter into trans. He simply cut a round piece and a hole in the center slightly smaller than the shifter so it would slide over tightly. This might work till you find an actual boot. Who knows..with a little work you could probably make up something which doesn't look too bad.

I'm with you Brian. need one for my H. It was also posted that water can get in thru standing in the "cups" around the bolts in the cover.

I gave up on a shifter boot. My "boot" is a tarp over the rear of my tractors when they are outdoors. My Allis WC has a nifty way of doing it. The shifter has a boot (well rotted) but the whole mechanism is under the main fuel tank. -BTD
