I need everybodys help! Can you take the steering gears out of a Super C and put them in a Super A. You can take the bottom of the steering wheel from 7:00 and turn it to 11:00 thats how much play is in the steering box. If ya'll can not help me. Please give me some websites or places where I can find the parts for the steering box or a kit for a Super A Farmall.

From 7 to 11 is only a quarter turn. I have a 44 A and despite all new bearings and nut tightening i still have it. The main problem is the gear that the worm works on. It just wears out. With Cubs this is a whole round as opposed to an 1/8th so you can just flip sides. I would be happy with what you have after doing the simple things mentioned.

If the fix suggested by Vern does not work, likely the bearings in the steering box are worn. You can check the thrust bearing on the worm gear by removing the big plug in the front of the steering gear and then screwing the worm out far enough to check the bearing for play. The bearing is easy to replace and cheap. You can get one at a Case IH dealer, or probably NAPA or just a bearing supply house if you have the old bearing with you. You can't take the worm all the way out unless you remove the steering wheel. Rebuilding the rest of the steering box is a bigger job. There are some other bearings in there that can also be replaced. If you put in new bearings, it will likely tighten up the steering quite a bit. To know if you can use the parts from a C, you will have to have a parts book for both the A and the C. Then you can check the part numbers and if they are the same, they will fit. The steering play on the A is a very common problem. If you find one that does not have much play, it means some one has rebuilt the steering box, or the tractor has been used little.

Brian, I didn't think that was much play in the steering wheel...it's only a little greater than a quarter of a turn. If the steering box on your Super A is shot, well, I guess mine is too.

Before you panic any further the most common reason for loose steering on a super A is that the arm is loose on the shaft that comes out of the bottom of the box. Stand in front of the tractor and turn the steering shaft with your hand. If the arm moves up and down then that is the problem.
Fix= #1 Remove tie-rods from arm. #2 Turn steering all the way to one side. #3 Tighten bolt that goes through arm. #4 Replace tie-rods.
Try this. It should at least reduce the amount of free play in your steering.

Vern
(PS. I have a super A and I have done this a few times.)
