I need a primer on the gas start kerosene / diesel run engine on an M. Does the engine have an injection system like a diesel engine? Spark plugs ?? If the gas part does not work will the engine start when cranking with the starter?? I know where there is an M with this system but I am not very knowledgeable about the system (you can tell right).

The M diesel is a unique motor. It is a true diesel engine with a standard diesel injection system, plus has a carburetor, spark plugs, etc as in a gasoline engine for starting. If the gas cycle of the motor does not work, the engine cannot be started with the electric starter - the starter does not have the power to spin the engine against the diesel compression. You can however pull start an MD - trick is to get the motor spinning fast enough for the diesel cycle to fire.

The gas-start IHC diesel is a good engine, but requires good maintenance and careful operation to insure reliable starting and long life

The starter on my MD will turn the engine in diesel mode, although slower than when in gas mode. It was not running when I got it, and could not get it started on gas. So I tried starting fluid and cranking on diesel. Two shots of ether later, it was running! Found I had a timing problem on the gas side, so I've only done the ether start twice, but it can be done.
