Couple of quick disk brake questions...

The SH is getting some badly needed brake service. I have everything apart and aside from lots of rust and glazing of the brake pads and braking surfaces, everything looks ok...not great, but I think I can salvage everything but 1 disk where the pad seperated from the disk due to rust.

The question is, how much pad is on NEW disks??? I have about 1/8-3/16" on the remaining pads, but what should new one ones have??

Also...the cast iron braking surfaces are pitted..not bad in some places, but not good in some others. I have cleaned them up with a sanding disk on a drill (poor man's milling machine), and the look OK. I'm going to hit the whole assembly with the sandblaster (except for the disks and balls) to clean everything and make sure I have the glaze off everything.

Is there anything else I should do? Thanks for the help...BB

Hey BB - I measured a new set of Super H disks on my parts shelf - they are 1/2" thick EXACTLY from surface to surface of the friction material. Your's sound worn but may still have some life left in 'em.

I've cleaned up and de-glazed the cast iron braking surfaces with an orbital pad sander - results were pretty good. Can sometimes get more life from friction disks too giving them the same sander treatment to remove surface glaze...

Thanks Bob...just what I needed to know. I think they are just about shot...at first I thought they were OK, but I'm just about out of adjustment on them. I'll send them out to be relined or I'll replace them (ouch - nuther $80). Thanks again for bailing me out again...BB

BB - $20 apiece for brake disks isn't too bad! According the the paperwork with mine, I paid $22 apiece for mine a couple years ago at CT. (Found sanding the glaze of the partially worn disks and metal brake surfaces made the old disks work like new, so the replacement disks I bought are still waiting on the shelf.) ...Bob M
