I have a 1950 H that when put into 5th gear for the road takes alot of throttle and clutch to get it going. Also on hills it loses power and I have to go 4th. Any ideas? This tractor starts and runs good, no smoke and halds good oil pressure. I have a 1940 H that runs circles around the 1950H. Also when this tractor is turning over to start I can hear a hissing sound from one of the cylinders. Compression? Thanks Andy in Ohio

Have you checked the clearance on the valves? I think it is .017" hot. If one is to tight, it could cause the hissing sound and also a loss of power and compression. If you have not checked this, I would as soon as possible. If a valve is to tight, you could burn it out any you would have to pull the head and get the valve ground. Is the hissing comming from the exhaust, intake, or somewhere else?

John Im pretty sure the hissing is coming from the exhaust and not from somewhere else. I dont have a compression tester, but I soon will. thetractor also sounds a little louder when it runs. Or a deeper "voice" than any other H Ive heard. I will check all of your advice soon thanks for your help. Andy in Ohio

Kinda a stupid question, but have you looked closely at the plugs? Maybe one is loose or cracked. This would account for the loss of power and the hissing sound. Dave.

The road gear for the H was plenty fast for the tractor. That is one way of checking out the mechanical shape of the tractor. It has to be in pretty good running order and have a good clutch in it to really go to the races in the road gear. I have noticed that this is one real good way to see if the clutch is slipping. If the clutch is not slipping then your engine is not up to snuff. Ussually if the clutch is not slipping the tractor will start missing on a cylinder when it is under a pull. Is your tractor missing when under a pull? If you have a compression problem in a cylinder this would cuase loss of power. I am just supprised that it don't start missing when under a load. You can check compression by taking a compression guage and with the proper fittings you can screw it into your spark plug holes and turn tractor over and then read the guage to see what compression is. Do this to all 4 cylinders and compare the readings to each other. I am not sure what the compression poundage should really be but you should be able to find that in a repair manual somewhere. Check the clutch for slipping and then compression and then give us some more information on what it is doing if you don't get it figured out.

Andy with that hissing sound, I would run a compression check and let us know what the four cylinders produce.

The compression should be around 75 to 90 Lbs depending on the shape of the engin . If that checks good you might look your governer. Ken
