I've acquired a mid 40's M with the all fuel engine. It hasn't been run in 7 years or so , but the engine turns free. I've put new points, cleaned mag, cleaned out carb-what else should I check before trying to crank the old gal? No observable leaks on engine, transmission,or pto.
When I turn it over with valve cover removed should I be able to tell if it's pumping oil and if any valves are stuck? This is my first project and since I have two sons helping, I want to do it right and safely.

Clean Fuel and fairly clean looking oil. If you crank it over long enough you should have oil up to the rocker arms but not right off the bat. You can see if the valves are stuck by looking at valve springs and rocker arm assembly while cranking engine over. Using the hand crank you can do this but you really have to stretch your neck to see valves. Maybe work better with 2 people. I would clean plugs, squirt about 1 squirt of oil in spark plug wholes, do a spark test, check oil level, check coolant level, if you don't change oil be sure to unscrew the drain plug slowly until fluid starts to drip and if it is oil you can tighten plug back up but if it is water or antifreeze you better atleast drain it tell nothing but oil comes out. Do this oil water check thing before starting. It will try to mix it together if it is running. Also look over air cleaner and check for cleaness and no mud dobber nests. Also look for rat nest or bird nest around exhaust manifold. This will catch on fire when tractor gets warmed up. You might make sure it is getting gas down to the carb before trying the enitial start. Good Luck

A few more things to do/check: disengage the clutch before running, then when running let it out very slowly see if how it runs. Also, make sure air filter is clean with fresh oil. Good luck.

Barry: This question gets asked often so ya might look over all the pages and maybe the archives. Main thing is clean oil and fuel. If you have the valve cover off, squirt lots of oil around the moving parts. I also like some thin oil on top of the pistons but the crankshaft is another story. Too bad there isn't an easy way to pump oil pressure up befor cranking to eliminate DRY AREAS (cam+Crankshaft). Might consider having plugs out to eliminate compression and crank with starter to get oil flowing? Some very costly aircraft engines have electric oil pumps for prestart oil pressure. I'll assume it was running OK last time? Nothing suspect busted? Clutch not stuck to flywheel? Go for it and re-check all after a short run. Good luck. Ralph

Suggest that you at least change the oil,filter, and coolant if you havent already done so.With the valve cover off make sure all of the valves are opening and closing properly.IF you are worried about the oil pressure,make sure the switch is off to the mag and turn it over for a few seconds at a time to make sure oil gets up to the rocker arms.

Welcome to the world of red machines. Yes you will see oil in the valve train but not right away. you will certainly be able to tell if a valve is stuck. A couple more ideas may be to pull plugs and put some not alot of oil in each cylinder to prevent scoring of the cylinders. Can you roll it over by hand with valve cover off and watch valves? I also might install a known working oil pressure gauge to prevent running very long with no oil pressure. I'm no expert but a few ideas for you and good luck.
