I have had an transmission leak since I bought my H.If I try to put in the proper amount of grease it runs out of the oil seal under the engin shaft that goes to the transmission.
This seal is directly under the shaft where it goes into the transmission.there is a stub of a shaft with threads on the end sticking out of the transmission, but the threads stop at the oil seal. I suspect there is an attachment the threads onto the end of the shaft and this is what the oil seal rides on.
Can anybody tell me what goes there.I am thinking that a belly hydraulic pump was there at one time.
Any info would be great.
ps it is a 1945 H
tks Bill R

That lower shaft is the drive for the belly Hyd pump. The drive nut just screws unto the lower shaft. That nut does three jobs. First it holds the brg. unto the shaft. Second it provides a place for the seal to ride and third it drives the hyd pump. You should be able to pick one up at a tractor salavge yard. The IH part number is 49 636D According to the parts book the part you are looking for is called the transmission countershaft nut. Good luck, this should help stop the oil from running out of the seal.

I saw your message reply to Charlie. As luck has it, I am having trouble with the same shaft. I got it uncoupled from the hydralic pump easy enough, but; Ican't seem to get it out of the transmission. If the piece we are talking about is a nut; doesit turn right or left? I took the outer bearing cap loose, and have some back and forth play. I thought that the short shaft was just seated tightin the bearing holder.I would appreciate any advice you could give. Thanks, Rich
