Grease in water passages, how to remove?

I just pulled the head on that A I bought last weekend, someone had apparently started an overhaul, got the head done and then decided to prep the engine for storage. The good news is that it is in excellent shape. They had smeared a LOT of grease on the top of the block and in the cylinders, then set the head back on, and filled the spark plug holes and intake and exhause ports with grease to keep water out, smeared grease around the head bolts, then smeared grease on the valve cover gasket surface, set the valve cover on, smeared grease around the valve cover bolts, also filled the space the mag mounts with grease. In other words, I got enough grease. Problem is, they ended up getting grease in the water passages and oil passages. Oil passages don't worry me too much, but I really don't want great gobs of grease floating around in this engine since it doesn't have a water pump to disperse them. Am I going to have to take it all apart and have it hot tanked? Sleeves (wet sleeves) are in decent shape, and I imagine I would end up having to replace the O-rings if I had the block tanked. Any other suggestions?

Big Fred, if the engine is torn down to that stage ,I would take some varsol and a cleaning brush set and wash it down, take a pressure washer and blast everything out and off the block, blow dry with an air hose, that should get everything out, but repeat if you have to. When you're satisfied wipe down the components with a little light oil on a cloth. The pressure and varsol should clean those water passages. Good luck from Mike in Exeter ontario

Thanks for kick startin' my brain. I guess I wasn't thinkin' clearly. All I gotta worry about is dissolving the grease, then I can rinse any crud outa there with a good flushing before I put the radiator on. Of course water will flow thru there if it's coming out of the garden hose.
