Two Questions
1: My 350 steers real hard and has since I got it.Is this normal or should I be looking for something wrong?
2:Underneath my rad cap sits what looks like a thermostat. Is that what it is ?

Art -

1 - Is your 350 wide or narrow front? If narrow front it should steer quite easily. Wide front will require a bit more effort, but still still should be able to be steered by a 12 year old. Possible causes for stiff steering: NF - No lube in steering box, failed bolster pivot shaft thrust bearing, dry pivot shaft bushings. WF - As above (except thrust bearing) + dry king pin bushings, stiff tie rod ball joints.

2 - The spring gadget under the rad cap is the cooling system pressure control spring/disc.

Have to disagree with Bob M on this one assuming you have the Utility tractor, and not the row-crop 350. The 300U and 350U are famous for being hard to steer, and you'd probably need to find an unusually strong 12-year-old who's going to be able to comfortably steer one that doesn't have power steering. That said, lubrication surely does help. Grease the heck out of the spindles and the tie-rod ends, and make sure the steering box has gear oil in it. Drive it a while, and grease it again, and repeat every few hours until it loosens up.

Doing the above changed the operator requirements for my 300U from a gorilla to a somewhat-more than 12-year-old human. Hopefully will work for you, also. Good luck.

You're probably right Dick! In my previous post I was thinking about a wide front Super H, not a 300 utility tractor. The SH has remarkably light steering for a WF tractor (I first drove one at about 12 years of age). And I've never had the pleasure of operating a 300 utility, but have strong-armed a similarly sized Case - a good candidate for aftermarket power steering...
