Bud - I'm NOT a puller, but both my daughter and I pulled my '53 Super M at the Churchville (NY) Lions Fair just for fun yesterday. Here's a few tips based our experience and my observation of several hundred pulls over the weekend... Weight class: If your tires are loaded your SM may just make the 6,500# class. If not, you can easily make 5,500# by adding weights (mine needed 300#). If you have lots of weights, enter 2 or 3 classes and experiment around a little. Stock or Stock Plus class: Recommend the Stock class. You'll be pulling against others like yourself with bone stock (theoretically anyway!) tractors and should be very competitive. Stock Plus allows stock RPM's +10%, mild engine modifications, straight exhausts, etc. It's a lot tougher for a field stock tractor against these guys. Weight distribution: At 5,500# observed the Farmalls need weight in the REAR. An my SM ran out of traction long before it ran out of power at 5,500#. So hang aux weights as far to the rear as allowed and don't worry about lifting the front end. Tire pressure: Our track was soft/muddy. One guy told me 8# was right, another said 20#, etc. So I gaged mine and found 'em at 10# and said "that's perfect!" (as if I could easily increase the pressure anyway....) Gear choice: I observed 2nd gear on the Farmalls gave the best results. (But some stock pulls allow only low gear so you'll have no choice...) Other: Make sure the motor is warmed up before you hook. You don't want a cold stumble or stall when the green flag drops. Also make sure you've got gas in the tank before you get to the line. One of my buddies ran his Deere dry about 50' into his pull - embarassing! ---- How'd we do? Daughter took 3rd in the "powder puff" (ladies) div, and I took 3rd (out of 19 entrants) in farm stock. Not bad for a working tractor....and my daughter is grinning like a cat that just ate a canary! Hope this helps and good luck!!
