Hi. My dad and I have recently purchased a Farmall super "A" model tractor, and would like to know a little bit about it. We arent sure of the year, but I would guess about 1950 or earlier, because the man we bought it from was 80 years old, and his wife's dad bought it new. It's a gas engine, and has both front and rear hydraulics. It's a manual tramsmission, and a hand crank, with an electric start conversion. It has the normal front end design, not the 'three wheeled' type. The carbouretor is a Carter, if that matters. What implements would be standard with it if we had purchased it new? I have a belly mower, disc, and a breaking plow that hangs under it.

Thanks,
68 Mag

There should be a serial # located on a plate under the seat (left support I believe). Get that serial number and look it up under Research and Info: Serial Numbers on the left column of this page. That will give you the year.

Well, I just looked. It's a 1950 Farmall Super "A", according to the chart on the website. I have another question now. A man at a local tractor shop told us this tractor only has 11 horsepower. Is this true? If so, why cant our 17 horsepower riding mower pull the disc? We tried to move the disc that way, it was too heavy. So can it really just have 11 horsepower?

The Farmall Cub had 10 or 11 HP. The Super A has 18 or so, and if the engine has been upgraded it will have more than 20 HP. A 17 HP lawn or garden tractor is no match at all for a Super A. The Super A weighs in at around 3000 to 4000 lbs depending on wheel weights, tire fluid and such. The 17 HP garden tractor probably goes about 600 to 700 lbs. What you can pull depends on the weight of the pulling vehicle as well as the HP. Also the HP on of the graden tractor is engine HP. Farm tractors are quoted as PTO HP which is less than the engine HP by 5 or 10 percent.

There was a large variety of implements offered for the Super A most of which also fit the later model and similar 100, 130 and 140 tractors. That basic tractor was produced from 1947 to 1979 and if you count the A which did not have hydraulics, but was similar as well, it goes back to 1939. So the basic same thing was produced for 40 years. The most common implement was cultivators. A large percentage of these tractors were so equipped. You could also get several kinds of plows, sickle mowers, dozer blades, a front loader ,etc in addition to what you already mentioned.
