The H rides again! I have had a terrible time getting my 1941 H to run. I read a post the other day about leaving the gas cap off to eliminate a vacuum being created in the fuel tank stopping the flow of fuel. Well lo and behold she was cranky about starting but when she started she stayed running! I drove her around for 20 minutes to get the oil nice and hot then drained it out. Oops! That 'oil' was a grayish mix of water and what may have been oil. I loaded in 6 quarts of non-detergent 30 weight and will give her a spin again tomorrow. Maybe I will have a tractor at our show. All are invited, my club, the Michigan Flywheelers Museum, is having our 18th annual show Sept. 6 through 9. It is in South Haven, Michigan. -BTD

Congratulations on your project! You might want to check your transmission for water as well, since you had a little in your engine, carefully loosen the drain plug under the PTO, and let some leak out ,keeping the plug against the hole,it'll shoot out faster than a calf with scours, take your watch off and don't try this in church clothes, suspect water if it's milky, there's quite a bit in that transmission, so get the plug back in quickly, report back to this forum if you find water,ok? Good luck...If you got water in there and with winter coming , ice can bust some the expensive parts, ouchy!

Even if it don't break, ice can make it impossible to get it to roll.

Contrary to other posts here, I'd put detergent oil in it and change it regularly if it gets real dirty.

I asked several months ago whether anyuone had actuall experienced a problem with detergent in an old tractor or just hypothesized it. I don't think I had any responses.

Chances are real good the last owner put detergent in it anyway. Only when someone who really loves a tractor gets ahold of it will they consider what kind of oil is really required.

Out of my 28 Farmalls, I have always put detergent oil in and never known that I had a problem.
