I went to an auction that had alot of old time stuff on it. The guy was a packrat and had been around forever. They sold sears catolog's from the early 1900's and about 100 years worth of junk if you know what I mean. He even had a 1915 Ford model T car that had been converted into a truck and stored in a shed after it quit running in the 30's, well you get the picture. He had several F-12's and F-14's and it looked like when each one quit running, he would work on it for awhile and then eventually go buy another one. All of these units had items missing like manifolds, carbs, mags, and so on. I watched all the tractors sell and there was collectors there from all over the U.S. and I thought the tractors sold pretty high. Right after they sold the tractors, the auctioneer's went back to the wagons and started selling off of them. Small items you know. While all these big tracter collectors were scratching there heads, figuring out how they were going to get there tractor loaded, I had something else in mind. Yep, I was looking over the items they were selling off the wagons. They sold quit a little stuff, and then they unburried all those parts that was missing from those old F-12's and F-14's, mainly just the magnito's. Well you know, those old F-4 mags will fit on a number of machines. I sat there and bought those mags for $10 a piece. I sat there bidding and looking down yonder at those guys giving there tractor a second look, and yes I did have a little grin on my face while the auctioneer couldn't figure out what was funny. I find it even more funny when I look in magazines and so on seeing those mags advertised rebuilt for $200 a piece. Well I guess I am just mag equiped for all those 1930's machines. I'll find some of these old relics to put them on. If I don't find them cheap I can wait. I got nothing but time. I just thought the whole situation was a little comical.

Good for you. At least I know someone that has one if I ever need one. I hope you don't hide them away for 50 years like the old guy.

Bill!

Your posting has been a real education. If ever I attend another auction, you've taught me to stay and high bid on the wagon loads of little junk. It might well turn out to be the parts missing from what I just bought. Might be the bargain I thought I got on the tractor turns out requiring me to mortgage the homestead. You've got the right idea though, buy the parts and sell to those who bought the items they fit on and make a profit? Thanks again for my free college degree in finance.

That happens at just about every sale I go to.

Unfortunately, around here they sell the little stuff first.

I watched a lot of junk boxes sell several years ago. I kept seeing mounted bearings, new and in the box, sell in seperate piles, but I wasn't identifying what they were in my mind.

Later at the equipment, I bid on and bought a five bar side delivery IH rake. (I was there for an H with M&W clutch, but it went too high). As I was bidding, I realized they were rake bearings, a complete set the guy had bought for his rake but not yet installed. It was a big auction and no way I could find the eight to ten buyers of ten bearings. Later I found the dealer wants $41 for each bearing assembly. I had to buy cam follower bearings and fabricate my own housings.

It is no fun being on the other end!

A good Auctioneer / sale preparer will put the parts together and increase the value of the sale for the heirs. I recently bought two step on tool boxes that mount on the side of my M's. They went cheap because all the mounting brackets were thrown in with some fencing stuff and nobody put the two offerings together. Ahhh Sales are so educational. Dick
