I recently rewired a SMTA that had been sitting outside for 2 yrs exactly wire for wire. Problem: When battery (neg. grnd. 12v)is hooked up there is constant juice to the alt.. This is how it is wired as best I can describe. From pos. termon batt. to starter. From neg. term on amp. guage to batt. term. on alt.(alt has a small box w/red wire to batt. and black wire to grnd on alt) Pos. on amp. guagegoes to coil thru the switch and a wire goes to the fuse also 1 wire to the starter. Any ideas why there is constant power to the alt.? Hope I described it well enough. Thanks for any troubleshooting advice. Andy in Ohio

Andy - by "constant juice to the alternator" do you mean the BAT terminal at the alternator becomes hot (12 volts shows), or there is an actual current drain when you connect the battery ? If the former, it's normal - you have no problem.

However if you are getting a current drain when you connect the battery, the problem's in the alternator - probably a shorted rectifier.

Bob, the battery does drain when it is hooked up.Is the rectifier the little box I described? It gets hot when the battery is hooked up also, but not when its running. What does a rectifier do? Thanks for the help, Andy

Andy - The rectifiers are inside the alternator - if they are shorted the alternator itself will heat up. Not certain what that box you describe is. Are there any markings on it, or can you describe it? Also do you know the make and type (i.e. internal or external regulated) alternator you have?

Suggest pulling the alternator off and taking it to NAPA, etc and have them test it.

BTW the purpose of the rectifiers is to convert alternating current generated by the alternator into direct current before it gets sent to the electrical system.
