My brother has found an old 1949 "H". At the end of the serial numbers are the letters "X I" or "X 1" can anyone tell me what these letters stand for. Thanks.

X1 at end of number indicates that tractor has a high compression gasoline-only engine w/ only one fuel tank (as opposed to the distillate engines that had two tanks: a large one for distillate fuel and a small one for starting).

what about "X3"?
have one H with "X3" and one with no suffix. one without has 2 tanks.
is there a list of what these mean somewhere?

My source says that X3 indicates kerosene. He also says that all the codes can be found in the book "International Harvester Tractor Data Book" by Guy Fay (I don't have the book).

Also, if you subscribe to Red Power magazine, look in the older issues (before the new owner took over). The previous owner ran all kinds of info like this on the front & back inside pages of the protective mailing cover
