I found a Farmall 240 for sale today. It is a very straight little tractor. As far as I can see, it is missing a few pieces, but rear tires are very good, paint is very good, fronts are not standard tractor tires, but good condition. Has hydraulics with remote hook-ups. It has PTO (independent I assume) and 3 point hitch (not 2 point Fast Hitch). The owner says it runs, but wasn't available when I looked.

Here is what it is missing:

The hood extensions on both sides (sheet metal that extends under the hood from the grill back to the fuel tank). Don't know if this is available or not, but I think a very close facsimile could be fabricated easily (no curves).

Top link and top link bracket.

Battery box.

Steering wheel is OK, but I would like to replace it.

I know there were just over 4000 240 farmalls made, but many parts interchange with 230s and 240 IHs. I don't like the styling too much, but it is a very straight machine and would be very useful even though it is a tricycle.

Here is what I think is the good part assuming it starts and runs OK...Asking price is $1250. What do you think??

You want to make sure to check the hydraulics, too. A mechanic friend of mine (who worked for IH for 20 years) said the hydraulics on the 240 can be a real "bitch". Especially the control valve right below the fuel tank. The systems tend to overheat. The pump alone can cost $600+ to replace.

I like my 240 utility but it doesn't have a lot of guts when bushhogging up hillsides.

I have a 240 utility, it has a factory 3-point quick hitch, this may be the type your tractor has.I have the owners manual for the tractor, then a manual on the 2 types of hitches. It uses the same bail for the 2-point hitch under the tractor, but instead of 2 point arms, it has a big odd looking set of fast hitch lift arms, and a little short factory top link. The toplink bracket is also part of the lift arms. 240's are good little tractors, I gave 1,250 for the utility, and then spent probably another 300.00 on it for tune up, batt., oil pump body gasket, pan gasket, other misc. gaskets, carb. kit, and etc. I know a guy that has 4 or 5 salvage 240's. If those hood sides would fit off a utility, he's probably got some. If you purchase the tractor, let me know and I'll check with him to see how much. Thanks, Willie-God Bless America

I've got an IH 240 utility. It is not independent pto. Those side hoods are next to impossible to find. Very few had 3 point, are you sure it doesn't have the 3 point conversion arms? (not as handy). I love my 240 utility, a great yard tractor. The price sounds reasonable if it runs & drives. The blocks liked to crack behind the carb & generator.

Thanks for the information. I wasn't aware that they didn't have IPTO.

The 3 point was either original or someone went to great pains to convert the 2 point because it wasn't 2 point arms at all. The arms were 1 piece steel all the way to the balls and there was a sway limiting system. I'm familiar with the 2 point system and it wasn't one of those. I had heard that 3 point was an option on the larger tractors of the same time.

Assuming it starts and runs well, I think the biggest problem will be the side hoods. I had heard they were hard to find and with such low production, I can se why.

Can these be fabricated with any degree of success from flat 1/8 or 3/16 sheet metal???

here's what I plan to do about the side panels on my 240- get 4 side panels from a 340 (which are shorter than 240 side panels), cut, and weld together. All those 240 side panels were removed due to overheating probelms, so mabey its better not to have them.

Price doesn't sound too bad. I would want to hear it run and make sure transmission and rear end are quiet. Check bat. charging system, check for smoky exhaust, etc.
