Head bolts for Super A

I have taken the head off a Super A, and am planning on removing the engine next. I was wondering how easy it is to take out the bolts or studs. Are they just threaded in ? can I use a pipe wrench ? I don't know if they have ever been removed before, any tips ?

Brian,
I just took the studs out of my Farmall A last week. I bought a stud remover which is a special tool that you connect to a 1/2 inch drive ratchet or breaker bar. It isn't that expensive as I remember (bought it several years ago). Some came out easy and some were really hard to get out, but they all came out. They are just threaded in with coarse threads. That end of the stud is some kind of a special 1/2 inch thread that will not work on my 1/2 inch thread die. Roger

Good luck with those studs. I twisted one off in my Super C block while torquing down the head. It was a real bear to get out. I purchase all new studs through Case IH after all that trouble. Quite expensive, but at least I didn't have to worry about twisting another one off or possibly have a leaking head gasket later.

I had a C several years ago that would not hold torque on the head nuts. I ended up removing them and using 1/2" bolts instead. Had to play with the length and use of flat washers to get them to the right depth. You don't want anything too short (don't grab enough threads) or too long that would bottom out and give a false torque reading. To get the studs out I put two head nuts together and tightened them against each other, then turned the bottom one to remove the stud.
