Diesel Knocking

I have an IH 706 that has started knocking loudly. I don't know much about diesel repair so I am asking for some help. What could be causing the knocking. I am thinking about having it rebuilt, I'm sure that would cure it. But I don't want to drop that kind of money if it is a couple part replacement, not a complete rebuild. It still runs good and it has power. It just hammers loud now. Any advice is appreciated.

Which engine do you have and did it start knocking all at once and is it real bad.

Brian, It's possible for an injector to make one sound like its about to come unglued. You might have them checked before you go all the way on a rebuild. It sure would be a lot cheaper.

In addition to what Big Al proposes, I suggest that you check to see if air has entered the fuel system; if so, bleed system. Also check the fuel injection timing; and make sure the fuel you are using is of good quality, the correct cetane rating, and not contaminated.

In other words, check the simple things first before you shell out the big bucks for an engine overhaul which probably is not needed.
