Just got my manual from binder books and was looking at exploded view of steering gear box for manual steering. I need to rebuild mine this winter and was wondering what the most common problems are. Looks like the gear could wear along with the shafts and bushings. Have any of you 300 owners ever rebuilt one?

It's on my to-do list for this winter. If you can find an e-mail for Roger Gleason (I believe he is in British Columbia), he has been into his recently.

Randy - Presuming your 300 is a row crop, common problems are worn pivot shaft bushings, worn worm gear bearings, and worn worm and sector gear. Often it's a combination of all three...

I replaced badly worn bolster shaft bushings and oil seal on my Super H this spring - it cured a chronic sloppy steering problem. Punch below for a few photos of the job.

My experience has been all bolster shaft bushings, with an occasional worm bearing, never a worn worm or sector.

I saw the pictures of the 300 steering gear box rebuild. I just bought an Int. 240. When you turn the steering wheel, the shaft to the front end turns, but the front wheels only turn if you are moving, with some help from the foot brakes. Do you know anything about the 240? It's a wide-front end, "utility" tractor, as opposed to a row crop. I just bought it recently and really like it's power, etc. It's just hard to steer. Any suggestions? Jim

I am helping a friend locate a Steering Box for an old John Deere Model 300 tractor.

Thanks, your help will be appreciated. Please send a copy of your reply to IDELLARRY@AOL.COM

Sorry I can't offer any advice Jim - I don't know a thing about the 240 utility steering...
