Missing pieces?

Hi, me again. I was just looking on our 1949 Farmall Super A, and I think there is a missing piece. Behind the gearshift cover, but in front of the PTO lever, there are two threaded holes side by side. There are no bolts in them, and I can see fluid of some type, possibly gearshift lubrication? Can anyone tell me what goes here, or provide a picture. Also, my father and I found the orginal cultivators that came with the tractor in 1949. These are ORIGINAL. But, we arent sure how they attach. Can anyone provide some pictures?

Thanks,
68 Mag

Never saw a cultivator that bolted anything to those two holes. In my experience they are seldom used for anything. I think maybe if you had a manual lift, some of the parts bolted to that. One use that I do know of is that a bracket for a two way plow bolts to those. It has over center levers to hold one plow up while you are plowing with the other. To use the two way plow, it requires the bracket, plus a special rear rockshaft that is split so each side can be lowered independently by using the over center levers that mount to the two holes you mention. If you have nothing to attach to those holes, get the water, etc out of them and then put a cork in them to keep anything from getting in there.

The two holes are threaded and are for bolting on one bracket for the rear cultivator and/or plow. If you have the cultivators I think there should be a piece of flat iron in the shape of a Y that bolts the rear rockshaft to the tractor. These are blind holes and the fluid you see is water from rain etc, I hope. Try sucking it out with the wifes turkey baister and see what you get. Good luck, Dave. PS Don't tell the wife I said to use the turkey baister.

Thanks for the help. I'm not sure if it is a full set though, because there isnt a 'Y' shaped piece, and I dont see any pieces that would attach to the rear. Oh, one more question. What exactly is a rock shaft? Is it the hydraulic lift bar, or the draw bar, or something totally different?

A "rockshaft" on a Super A, Super C, or Cub is the shaft that "rocks" back and forth when you operate the hydraulics. The rockshaft arms attach to the equipment to lift. lower, push, or pull.

On the super A the bar between the rear fenders that connects to the front and goes up and down with the hydrs. is also called a rockshaft. The rear cultivators have rods with springs on them that come up and attatch to this bar to lift them up and down. The frames bolt in place of the rear draw bar, one on each side.
