Hi ,my generator belt broke and in order to install a new one I must remove the fan belt.WELL the pulley is stuck tight,I have been using PB Blaster on it for a week now and it's still the same as when I started.I loosened the set screw,I even take it out to shoot blaster in the hole.ANY help would be great,as this is making me say many bad words!Would somthing like a craftsman strap wrench work?Sorry this is so long....I think I'm getting an anuerism! BillJ

One post recommended using a cold chisel. Invest in a brass punch. Gentle raps will probably start it turning. Maybe a lot of gentle raps with a big hammer. Vibration is your friend.

For broken set screws a good welder can weld a little nut on it. I got lucky and welded one on one time and got the set screw out. the heat of welding is what loosens the screw. Second best is to get a left-hand drill bit to drill it out. If you are a little lucky the setscrew will turn out before you have drill too far.

There is another boss that can be drilled and tapped if you ruin the hole getting the screw out.

Bill - I've got a similar problem with my Super H - only on mine the head's snapped off the fan pulley adjusting flange set screw. So the adjusting flange is locked tight. Found I can still remove the fan belt however. Trick is to get the belt started off one side of the crank pulley (a large screwdriver is helpful here). Then simply turn the crank and fan together - the belt will get pretty tight for a bit, but it WILL come off. It's not real good for the belt I'm certain, but mine's been off and back on several times and it's not stretched enough to cause it to slip (yet).

At some point I'm gonna have to get a whole fan hub assembly unless I can figure a way to get that #(*&@! set screw out of the adjusting flange...

One more thing. When I pulled the whole assembly off and tore it down at the bench, I found a multitude of small pieces of sodder that over time must have come loose from the inside of the radiator wedged into the corners of the water pump assembly. Infact, enough so that they were partially blocking the inlet. Moral to the story... go the distance and check out the whole thing and fix the pulley all at the same time.

Try to remember that this restoration work is supposed to be fun.....!??
I soaked the area with solvent and tapped on it with a cold chisel for several days, until it finally came loose.
Good luck....it can be a frustration.....

When I redid my waterpump assembly on my H, my pulley was originally stuck tight also. Infact, the adjusting side of the pully was cracked but it was still stuck tight. I ground out the crack and brazed it back together - still holding today. There is no easy way to solve your problem other than to take the whole assembly off and take it over to the bench and start tearing it down and cleaning out the threads. Be carefull when you beat on the tabs on the side of the pulley that you don't get to carried away as you can crack the pulley also. Simply remove the 4 bolts that mount the whole assembly. You will need a new gasket most likely but it will be about as easy to work on it at the bench and at this point, you can put new packings in the unit while you are at it. In the end, you will be better off. If you go this route, be sure and use at least three of the little packing pieces down in on the center shaft to assure a good seal. After I had it apart, I used a little never-sieze on the pulley threads before I put it back together also. In the end, I was glad I went the extra steps - pulley works great now. In restoring my 45 H, I have come to appreciate much of the designs used in these tractors but this pulley assembly is not one of them. Also - don't over grease it.
