Rust flakes from fuel tank finally out.

At long last, I have a pretty well cleaned fuel tank on my Super M. The tractor had not been used for about 15 years and the tank was a mess of varnished fuel and water. I cleaned it as best that I could with a power washer which helped but sure was not a cure. I replaced the sediment bowl with some pieces of pipe arranged into what looks like a drip leg for natural gas on a furnace and added an inline fuel filter. Every time the rust flakes would clog it up, I would clean it out and after several tanks of clean fuel and repeated rust cleanings, it seems to be clear of the rust flakes. Now I can adjust the carburator and tune up the tractor since the fuel supply is now adequate. Just wanted to let the group know what worked for me. Sure is nice to have that tractor working as it has been in the family since 1963.

A good way to get rust out of a gas tank is to run a magnet around the tank. It will pick up all the rust.

I took off the sediment bulb, it had a little bit of dirt on the bottom of it but it was not bad. I put it back after cleaning it and turned on the gas but at first nothing happened then gas dripped into the bulb slowly. I don't know what to do next. I think that the top part of the sediment bulb screws off. I think I maybe haveing the same problem as you. Thanks for your help.

Luke,

Like Red said, you can unscrew the sediment bowl assembly and clean out the inlet on top of it. It was always my job as a kid to keep my finger in the tank outlet while my dad cleaned the sediment bowl inlet :)

When everything is back together and sealed up properly, the gas will only drip into the glass at a slow rate. To see the glass fill quickly, unscrew the gas line where it enters the carb so air can escape and the glass bowl will fill quickly. This lets you know that the inlet to the sedimet bowl assembly is clear.

Hope this helps,

Bob

Luke the inlet pipe, that sticks up in the gas tank, on the sediment bowl assembly is plugged. You will have to unscrew the entire assembly from the tank to clean it.
