2..Question's..
I got a Gallion Grader 101, Ser.# M5367 Model #G25975A
She run's fine as long as you have a load on her.. but if it's tramed for even the shortest dist. she loses 1 hole..I can "switch back to gas & clean it out/build some heat then switch back to Diesel & work her she does just fine,(alltho- under powered, that's another question)
I'm wondering if a "Re-Ring" would correct this or ? I've run the valve's & had the injector's tested? It's a great setup if proper-start-up &shut-down procedure's are followed,as most of these have starting valve problem's IF the vales aren't allowed to COOL on their seat's.
From what I have found..so far..is this motor was used in many indust. application's & I think? the UD-14A & TD-14A are interchangeable??room permiting.

#2 Question
As these are very underpowered,NORMALLY asperated has anyone heard of lightly,turbo-ing one of these??

Any info.ie: site's club's,part's & most of all "been there done that people" well..I couldn't thank you enough...winter is comming & we have no county maint.so I do it for all of us that live in this part of the country..

Thanks Again
Ben

Ben - If it's IHC powered, it counts in my book!!

Sounds like you have low compression on the cylinder that drops out. Presuming the valves are OK, renewing the rings on the offending cylinder should fix the problem. Hard part's gonna be locating a ring set. Question: Does the motor have a thermostat and is it working? If the motor is running too cold it could drop a cylinder when running in the diesel cycle and under light load...

I'd be hesitant about applying a turbocharger to a UD-14. I saw it done once to a TD-24 but it wound up with durability problems. Not sure if problems were in the motor or the drive train, but the TD-24 was swapped for a D-8 Cat a few months later. Also unless you can turn up the injection pump to take advantage of the extra combustion air, adding a turbo won't add any noticable performance. (It'll sound cool though!)

Far as I'm aware the TD-14 crawler uses the same motor as UD-14 power unit - i.e. the engines are interchangeable.

Bob your right on track, heat is power..I went as far as to put a sign/rad.cover on her it does have a thermostat, the sign is 2 fold, 1, helps build heat(she's always run cold,150-160'w/o a load)2-it say's this is my machine & my money FIXING YOUR ROAD!!NOT YOUR TAX's.
I have a SealPower ring #but as you probably aware,The Fed.Mogule,TRW, SealPower Merger has REALLY screwed us on the "older stuff" they dropped & discontinued alot of pt.#'s & those that they kept..well, expect to pay 50-75%more..
F.P.smith is pretty good,I got alot of parts for my "Ol'e Yeller"-3cly-2H cat.she push's a full blade now.
I would think that Rod brg.& condition would be the most critical, asuming the piston's arn't slapping the wall & the pin's a fine?
Getting back to the basic's... I built an adapter for the monster spark plugs & will do a "leak-down" on her today..I could put a screaming Jimmy-2stroke in her....NOT..L.O.L.
It has an IH inj. pump

I am sorry to say that it sounds more like a cracked head to me. Working ok under load is the biggest clue. By the way you can only do a leakdown test on the gas cycle. The spark plugs are not in the compression chamber on diesel.

David..thanks for the info, crack's don't seem to work that way for me,they seem to "grow under heat and pressure"the hotter this hole run's the better she pull's..w/o any blowby or coolant pressure increase,I checked for combustions gas's some time ago.
You are saying that I'd have to do the leak-down thru the Injector w/ the starting valves closed & that cly on TDC (power stoke of coarse)??
thank's again
Ben
