looking at picking up a 1968 IH 500 D2 Purchace price $1500. I was told the steering clutches are gone. The diesel is suposed to be a good runner. Can anyone advise me if this is a fare price or should I run from this. Thank you. Bruce

Bruce: I had a crawler for 10 years that was about that size. Mine was only 9 years old and low time when I got it.. but older well used machines can be very spendy to maintain. Purchase price can be sometimes the smallest cost compared to upkeep. Get someone who knows that model and can advise you about condition. Often "undercarrage" is half the value. Don't take this as a "don't buy" but rather as a better way to evaluate by using an experianced person to check-it-out in person. By the way, I bought mine with one steering clutch not working at a big discount. I played a hunch that it was a bit rusty from nonuse and I was right. I got it working in a couple hours for near zero cost. I enjoyed driving it very much coompared to many wheel units. good luck. ralph

thanks for the comments Ralph. I did briefly check over the idlers, track and chains, sprockets. at a glance there seamed to be very little wear. I've always liked tracked equipment. I'm a welder/Plateworker so the upkeep doesn't scare me off.

Bruce: Your willing to do the labor is not the expensive part. Buying the new repair pieces is the spendy area I was trying to make. A friend had the axel to the main drive wheel break in two on his machine. That axel, and related parts, cost over $1000. I paid almost $1000 for a bull gear and large roller bearing and some small parts on another machine. My point was you could have problems and have much more than $1500 purchase price in just several internal parts. Who makes cheap drivetrain parts for that model? Most likely nobody. If you just want to play, then maybe you won't care too much. If you want it to do real useful work and make a profit, then you should consider the cost of repair parts. Your choice. ralph

Ralph you are right. I was not looking at the big picture. I have started to look for a 4x4 rubber tired tractor instead. I talked to several people with tracked machines an for what I want it for the upkeep would be intense. Well I haven't wasted a dime yet, thanks to a little research on the web and just talking to the right people. thanks again. Bruce
