I have a 1950 H that I think just broke the pressure plate over the weekend. The symptoms are that the clutch pedal is mushy and light. When the clutch is pressed in it doesn't disengage, and when I look in through the bottom inspection plate, I see one of the three arms of the pressure plate about 1 inch away from the throw out bearing. The other two arms are almost in contact. If I loosen the bolts for the pressure plate, the pedal gets better pressure, the arms become even, but the clutch still doesn't disengage. If I look back in the Farmall archives, someone described the offset fingers as a cracked pressure plate. Do any of you know how to check if the pressure plate is cracked or does this sound as if the pressure plate is cracked? If it is, can I replace it without splitting the tractor? Is it better to split the tractor even if I can get it out through the bottom? Thanks for any feedback - 2nd Dave inMN

You have a major problem in there and no matter what a broken spring or disk or pressure plate it has to be split, no way around it.

NO WAY, IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE SPLIT !!!!!

You may have a major problem there, BUT you can without a doubt replace the clutch and pressure plate on a H by removing the hydraulic belly pump and working through the opening.

It can be done by doing so, I have changed two of them by using this method. While in there you should replace the clutch release assembly too.

Check some of the older post that were listed by "The RED". He is a super person with a lot of knowledge about the H series farmalls. He has provided advice about this procedure many times on this board.

Good Luck

You have me confused with Haas and other folks who have messed with the clutch. I haven't tackled a clutch job so far.

Check for a broken spring under the release lever.

You can get it out through the bottom. Easier than splitting the tractor. Sounds like you already have the Lift all unit out. You will have to take it out if it's not out already. Take the bolts out of the main drive coupling and remove the main drive shaft. Those bolts are tapered, so it's a chore to break them loose. Also before you take the coupling loose, take three of the 6 bolts out that hold the clutch to the flywheel. Transfer those bolts into the threaded holes provide and tighten them in to compress the clutch. You'll also have to take out the clutch release carrier and maybe the cross shaft that works the clutch. Once you get the main drive shaft out, the clutch should come out also after you unbolt from the fly wheel. I've done this on an M, not an H and I think the H is easier because there is more room.

Thanks for the info. I don't have the liftall unit out yet. I have done all the work through the inspection plate in the bottom. Do the symptoms sound like a cracked pressure plate?

Careful with the Lift All. It's heavy. When I removed mine, I replaced the bolts that hold it in with threaded rods and nuts, and jacked it down with the nuts. There are other methods, just be sure you don't drop it, expecially on any body parts. I don't have enough knowledge to say if I think you have a cracked pressure plate or not. Once you get the lift all out, you will be able to see a lot better.
