Returning to tractors after many years away from the old H, I am perplexed at recomended rear end fluid for my 1957 450 is sae10 plus additive. What`s there now seem awful thin. How is the heavy gear pressure different now than 60 yrs ago?Isn`t IH hydra-tran quite thin also? Thanks in advance. BEL

Hy-Tran is used now because with the heavier oils like 80/90 the TA doesn’t get enough lube. I put in it in my 400 last winter after I rebuild the TA and its working fine.

I have used Hy-Tran in our red ones, but I have heard 80/90 wt gear lube helps stop gear movement faster- easing the gear grinding. I have never tried this but I know it does make sense and our gears do grind alot when shifting, just have to hold in the clutch a little longer!

Those 281's in a 450 produce alot of torque, gear oil also might give more protection in the rear end as well!

Use HyTran. It'll take the pressure just as good or better than a heavier oil. You can use Hytran in the old letter series tractor transmissions as well.
