Hi Tractor Guys: Have a Fairbanks Morse mag. from a small 1 cyl. eng. It has very weak spark. Even after cleaning all electrical connections and filing the points the spark will jump only the thickness of a post card. The impulse mech. works fine. How do I trouble shoot the problem? Are there magnets that get weak? How do I check the coil. The coil seems muchy and soft, I think gas has seeped over the mag. since the carb is directly above it. Could this be the problem. Any ideas or do you just send them off to get repaired somewhere. Seems most the magneto shops in my area are gone. So are the old timers who were smart enough to repair them. It's sad, but can you give me some advice. Thanks Bill

Here's my favorite magneto site. I don't think Bill has the time to rebuild the units anymore, but he's a great source for parts and technical info. The part of the site where he discusses the various manufacturers and their pros & cons is interesting. I just wish someone would hurry up and reproduce Case/Slick magneto parts!

Another web source is Magneeders:

The coil being soft does not sound good. The gas may have damaged some of the insulation and you may have shorting between the windings. The magnets inside a mag can loose their energy over time.If you can find a guy with a magnet charger they can be restored to proper strength. You may want to call 1-800-magneto.Nice guy who will not be afraid to help you.

ditto on the soft coil. you can do a lot of damage to a magneto not intending to do it by just opening it the wrong way. magnetos aren't as forgiving as engines when you make a mistake, taking them apart. i'd contact one of the mag advertisers at this site to see if he could give you a ballpark price to fix it.
