I used a 1486 over the weekend and found it really nice to use except J.D. is right, it was hard to shift and I had trouble seeing the drawbar. But I'm only 5' 7" so I think the taller you are, the better. It seemed quiet enough. I'd take it for a test drive and see if it shifts ok and check out the drawbar visibility issue. If I needed one that big, I'd feel good about buying one.

I think the 1486 would be a good choice as a used tractor. They had the 436 cu. in. turbo diesel as did the 1586. However the 1086 had a higher torque curve even though it had the smaller 414 turbo diesel and was easier on fuel than the 436. Aside from the engines the 1086 and 1486 were pretty close to the same tractor. I think the 1486 was 145 hp and the 1086 was 130. There are more 1086 tractors out there than 1486 tractors, real close in hp. As far as reliability they are as good as any. The 86 series was the first IH tractors with a quiet cab. Some people thought they rode rough because the operator's seat is toward the center of the tractor. Another drawback was the drawbar and hitch are nearly impossible to see from the seat. You should sit in the seat and see if this is going to pose a problem. IH did mount a mirror above the back glass to aid in seeing the drawbar and hitch. These tractors are not the easiest to shift gears either. Check that out before you buy. I am IH red to the bone though and am willing to overlook such shortcomings myself. Deere had theirs, also.
