Just got my head off of a 1940 H. The tractor had sit up for about 5 years and looked like a where the valves were open it let rust and maybe water blow into the cylinder. After I cleaned it out I noticed a few small pits in the sleeve. They do not go all the way through and you have to shine a light down in there to see it. Will this cause any major problems when I put in back together?

Agr538: Red is much more of an expert on H's but I'll add that since you said "small" pits that ya might want to try a hone lightly first befor removing those sleeves. Some times "small" pits of surface rust can be cleaned. Not much to loose in trying befor tossing them away? If at the lower end of the sleeve where less compression is involved ya may luck out? It also depends on how perfect ya want the job done. ralph

You will need to replace those sleeves. They will quickly tear up what is left of the rings.
