Proper way to attach?

I have a 1941 MD and I have new tires mounted on their 38" rims. The way my rims attach to the hubs are as follows: The bolt begins from the back side of the hub, passes through the first rim clamp, then through the hub, and then a jam nut is attached on the otherside, then the second clamp is slid over the bolt, and finally the nut goes on the end. "Is this correct?" My manuals do not show illustrations of the mounting clamps and their related parts.

I was thinking the Jam nut is not necessary as it makes the outer clamp sit far from the rim, unless you reverse it. Any input is much appreciated as this is my first tractor I have owned. Thanks!

Brad

Also works best to tighten them down evenly, ie tighten one slightly, then the one across from it other wise they seem to pull wrong on the wheel. Think the jam nut also helps to keep the bolt from turning when you are tightening and loostening the nuts.

The clamps go on the opposite way as they appear they should be,and when you tighten them they put a lot of pressure on the rim to hold it from turning.

Yeah, the jam nut is needed to keep the clamp assembly located around the wheel center. If you leave the jam nut off, the rim clanps can "float" back and forth the 1/2-3/4" slack in side loaded conditions like in the furrow plowing. Put it all together like it was designed and you shouldn't have any trouble. Tighten all of it really tight!
