This might be a dumb question but does the belt pulley run at the same rpm's as the pto?

Bob,

No, they don't run the same rpm. Here are the specs from my Farmall Super C book.

PTO Shaft (Maximum under full load) ..... 539 rpm
Belt Pulley (Maximum under full load) ... 1,363 rpm
Belt Speed (with 8½" pulley at full load speed) ... 3,033 ft. per min.

I'm too far away from My library, but I think the H & Super H, 300/350 belt pulley runs about 1100 RPM. The belt pulley runs off the top of the constant mesh gear in the H & M series. That's the first gear inside the transmission. The constant mesh gear runs at engine RPM anytime the clutch is engaged. The Belt pulley lever slides the gear inside the belt pulley housing into engagement with the constant mesh gear. The PTO runs off the back of the lower transmission countershaft. This shaft is driven by the constant mesh gear with a specific reduction ratio, to slow engine RPM down to approx. 540 RPM for the PTO. The gears on the countershaft are keyed on the H and splined on the M. They don't move up & down the length of the shaft. The "Sliding Gears" on the top shaft are what shifts the tractor into the different gears. And the top shaft has the differential pinion on the back end of it. A parts book or service manual should make this all clear. My reprint of the H service manual has an excellent cut-away view of the whole tractor.

You know, I'm interested to know some factual info on this myself. I have an F-20 farmall and the pto and the belt pulley is actuated with the same lever. That kind of tells me that the rpm would be the same. But you got to realize that the pto is about the size of a half dollar and the belt pulley is a good (just guessing) 12 to 14" in diameter which gives it considerably more throw when using a belt. I know on H's and M's, and I'm assuming on the other letter series tractors, the pto and belt pulley is actuated with seperate controls. Wheather that attributes to different gearing I don't know but would assume it would be close if it was to be different. I just figured the 2 shafts didn't need to rotate at the same time which would explain the need for 2 levers. I'm sorry this statement isn't more factual but I plan to check back up here to hopefulley read some more informational comments.

The belt pulley runs considerably faster. I made an adapter years ago that mounted a pto sprayer pump on the belt pulley flange of our H, and we could then spray at lower engine rpms.
