I noticed looking at photo's of 300 utilities that some had exhaust pipes straigtht up like most tractors and then some like mine have the exhaust coming down under the tractor. Was that an option from the factory?

Randy, the vertical exhaust was a factor option. The vertical exhaust/intake manifold for both Farmall and Utility tractors have the same part number. The left hand hood piecies had different part numbers due to the hole in one for the exhaust. How ever you will see many 300/350 Utility tractors that have had the elbow for the under slung exhaust turned up and a hole cut through the hood. When the elbow is turned up it exits to the front of the hood and points at an angle towards the front of the tractor. It doesn't look very good at all.

According to my parts manual, the vertical exhaust was a factory option. Different manifold and hood at least. The hood is part number 365 393 R11. I've never seen one that way, though, only underslung exhaust. How's your steering box rebuild going? I'm pulling my 300U into the garage this weekend for steering, exhaust, electrical and fast-hitch work over the winter.

I believe the out the top stacks were a "field" modification. Mine had been stuck out the top at some time in the past, then rerouted below and the hole in the hood welded shut.

Yeah, it was a "field" modification alright! After we nearly caught a hayfield on fire when a drawbar pin on the left side of the standard drawbar accumulated some hay while crossing a windrow, we drove to the barn, ripped the hood off the left side, turned the manifold outlet pipe upside down, hacksawed the exhaust system into parts we could use, and re-installed the pipe and muffler. Didn't look as pretty, but we never had the fire problem again. Also didn't have the problem of cooking the driver's left foot anymore! That little factory-equipped heat shield under the left foot rest must have been designed for use in cold climates.

You had a heat shield under the foot rest? Mine doesn't have one, just the foot rest and it does just fine in the winter as a foot warmer.
