morning folks. first let me say this. i'm not a farmer, nor do i live or work on a farm. BUT, i want a farmall H so bad, i would trade my new dodge ram for one! ok, now that i've said that, really, i'm interested in finding out more about the "H". i don't know anything about tractors, (i've drove one and used a bush hog before) but if a guy wants to learn more, what do i do? around here, (KY) a lot of folks have J.D.'s. that's one reason i've found the Farmall so attractive. the more of it i've seen, the more i want one. i was thinking about a project tractor. here's what i've thought about. first, learn all i can about the "H". second, find a good one for sale. third, give it a loving home. but i have so many questions, i don't know where to start. any help, ideas, opinions is very much appreciated.
thanks to all who have taken time to read this. bill

Bill,
I have a 48 farmall H that I'd trade for your dodge Ram! It only needs a little work , like a new engine, tires, paint etc.
But it does have a brand new three point!
Seriously, I love this old H or I wouldn't even think of doing all this work to her if I didn't.
I live on a small acreage (1 acre) and she's way more tractor than I really need but she's sure fun to work with. I don't think I'd be happy with a smaller tractor.
one word of advice, Look for a good running tractor, it can get expensive to rebuild the old engines. I is usually much cheaper to buy one in good shape.

I thought I was the only fruit with a Super M on 1 acre! I live in suburbia, the neighbors all think I'm nuts ( that comes in handy sometimes!)until I use the bucket on Molly to clear out the windrow of snow in front of their driveway after the town dumps it there after their contract plow has left.
I'm looking for a hobby farm to retire to, but my city-bred wife wants to be somewhat close to what's left of her family. In New England that's tough to do unless you are filthy rich. Oh, well I still got time. This is probably going to kill Bill, but I've had my SM for about 2 years, and I just bought something to haul her with - a 2002 3/4T 4WD Ram with the Cummins diesel. Don't have to trade for anything, but I'm working a little deeper into my retirement to pay things off..... .

I grow up on a farm with the "M" our biggest. now farms sold and I live in the edge of town with 13 Farmalls and no land or implements to pull and the "M" is still the biggest. So get any model and go for it there all great.

I'm like you. I don't live on a farm and have no need for a tractor. I did grow up on a farm in Mo driving H's and Super H's. I have had the fever for a year or so to get another H and refurbish it. This past Labor Day weekend, my wife and I drove from Colorado back to Mo and got us an H, 1946 model. I'm having the time of my life tearing it down, cleaning, replacing seals and bushings and prepping her for painting. Don't know many folks who live in the middle of town have Farmalls in their garage while the Jimmy and K2500 set outside!! Have fun when you get one.

I sold my Farmall M and bought an H last month. It's currently here in Huntsville, AL awaiting cleaning and painting, but will soon be at my farm in East Tennessee, not too far from Kentucky. Where are you located in KY? You probably have the best source of free info on everything Farmall right here on this board. Good luck with your addiction!

Ah, another person with blood-type "H". You're in good company here. You can go to the farmall H website as recommended and get good information. You can also click on the achives in this web site under the IHC-Farmall discussion forum and review past discussion topics on these classic red horses. Many parts are still available for the H so you can be confident that when you find your one-and-many-others (Your H will reproduce) you will be able to bring her back to prime condition. Welcome aboard, fellow Farmall enthusiast. Enjoy.

I have a '45 H, my first tractor, and I LOVE it!! The sound it makes, the feel, everything about it is appealing. I bought a '48 C as well, but not quite the personality of the H. If I had run across another H in similar (or worse) condition for the money, I would have done it. (Dad says 2 makes me a collector, makes me feel better).

The forum here is the greatest source I have found, and my wife says I spend too much time looking. I agree with the others about www.farmall-h.com, TW there is great, prompt with email, the site is highly informative, and if you look carefully down his list of "Hs on the Web", mine is there in it's early state. Also one under implements of my Saginaw 3-point.

Have fun, good luck with the Farmallitis!

I couldn't help but respond to this. Especially the part about where to start.

You have already gotten off to a good start by deciding you want an H...I did too but ended up with a Cub and Super H instead.

Second, you have found this board...all the best help you could get for free and if you had to pay for it it would be worth it.

Third...jump in. I stewed over the Cub for months but bought the Super H right away. Neither ran when I got them but they both run great now. Get out and look at every tractor you can. Believe me, you will soon be able to seperate the junk from the rest. A restored or re-built one (if the seller has the receipts to back it up) is your best bargain. Most people put more into tractors than they will ever hope to get out of them.

Enjoy...you have one of the healthiest addictions around...BB

A good place to start your research is this forum. Lots and lots of good advice, tips and help when you need it. I don't have an H but I too would like one. My problem is I already have 5 tractors so its kinda hard to justify another. You may also want to take a look at M's, they're a bit bigger and more powerful. Good luck to you.

I can understand what you are going thru, I'm taking a break from restoring JDs and just bought a IHC 400 so ive got to get recalibrated and this site is about the best place to do it.

My suggestion would be to join a antique tractor club and get close to the Farmall guys ( buy a couple beers ) you will get all the information you want and more and make some good friends

Have fun Don
