A tractor I'm looking at buying is showing signs of being in a fire, I have to say it runs like new and the trans and rear end sound quiet but the gas gauge fuel cap and pre cleaner are showing signs of being in a fire which I never noticed before, almost all the wireing and the steering wheel look like that of a used tractor as does the rest of it, should I be worried or not and go ahead and try to purchase the tractor as I'm sure the person selling it won't tell me either way but I do know when something run's good and is in good shape otherwise I think.
I do know it's a 50\50 deal buying it and the gas cap and precleaner could be from a different tractor but I'm wondering if there are any other tell tale signs of a burned tractor?

I once broke an axel on a Farmall 300. In a search for parts found the entire rear housing of a 300 that had burned in building. From this in time I used the axel, the fast hitch (less cylinders and hoses), transmission gears 3 and 4. This housing had been hot enough no paint anywhere, there was oil in the housing. That was 30 years ago and the parts mentioned are still going.

I see where Bleedinred is coming from as far as seals go but there aren't that many seals on the SC and all but one are easy to get at. You must remember this tractor is nearly 50 years old and the seals don't last forever anyway, if seals are leaky it is probably from old age. It is not nearly as complicated and o ring and seal dependent like a 4020 would be. You say the wiring is okay? If the thing runs good and all is quiet it is most likely okay. I would check out the hydraulic system and see that it works and sounds okay. There again a lot of these old tractors need the pump and touch control rebuilt anyway so that would be hard to determine if it is fire damage or just old age. It is possible the bottom portions of the tractor didn't get too hot even if it were in a building fire which could explain the gas cap and precleaner damage. Look at the radiator to see if it looks resoldered or replaced as they usually fall apart pretty quick in a hot fire.

I ran a 4020 for a few years that had been in a dealership shop fire. It looked pretty good after they repainted it, but quite a few seals never were replaced and it wasn't long until they let loose. Depends on how hot it got and if the seller doesn't want to tell you that, caveat emptor (beware!)
