The big nut

Tried searching the archives but got more hits regarding the belt pulley that anything else. Can someone tell me if the large nut holding the fan / water pump pulley on the front of an H engine is right hand thread or left hand thread? That nut is being un-cooperative in the removal process. Thanks! BTD

I just pulled the water pump off my '44 H and replaced all the gaskets, bearings, seals, and packing. It was eaiser to take it off tractor and work with it on the bench. The flange that the others refer to, tends to get a lot of dirt in it and can be a bugger to get loose. I sprayed WD-40 into it for a day or two and finally put it in the vise and tapped it (pretty solid smacks) free with a brass rod and hammer (don't forget to take out the locking screw the others mentioned). It couldn't be turned free using a strap wrench, but the vibration of tapping on it freed it up easily. It wasn't entirely clear from your e-mail, but you may be talking about taking of the water pump bearing clamp nut (not the flange). You will need to get this off to get at the seals and bearings. Mine was in there tighter than the dickens. I didn't have a box end wrench large enough and it wasn't a hex nut, so I couldn't use the 3/4 socket. I finally got it off by clamping the flat sides of the nut in the vise (put some flat steel between the vise and nut to keep from scaring the nut)and turning the pump assembly, again a little WD may have helped the process. This nut is also a standard right-handed thread. Hope this helps, let me know how it goes for you.

There is a set screw to keep the big nut from turning. The set screw has a lock nut on it to keep it from coming loose. You must first loosen the lock nut, then the set screw and then you can turn the big nut. As mike said, it turns counterclockwise to loosen it. Also, the big nut is for adjusting the belt tension by adjusting the width between the two halves of the pulley and is not what holds the pulley on the shaft.

Are you talking about the frt crk pulley? That nut needs to be turned counterclock wise for removal.

That's the pulley I'm having trouble with! And now I know to call it the crank pulley as well! It gets frustrating sometimes when you don't know the exact name for something. Thanks! I'll keep trying to move it counterclickwise.

There is a keeper washer behind the nut that you need to bend the corners back up straight on first. Good Luck
