I drained the oil out of the crankcase and there was LOTS of gas in the oil. Does anyone have an idea where to start looking for this problem.

Sounds like a float problem. Ms are notorious for flooding if you don't cut off the gas after running. My neighbor's M has flooded out several times.

Andy, I believe your problem is either coming from the needle valve in the carburetor not seating properly, so as to either fill up and run in through the valves when sitting idle for long periods. Or you have a major restriction in the intake somewhere, such as the oil bath on air cleaner being plugged, or the mesh in filter full of chaff. Remove the bottom oil pan on air cleaner, and take a look at the mesh and see if it appears full of chopped hay, grass whatever. You may have to remove it to clean it good. Another spot to look is through the center tube, by removing the top bonnet of the air cleaner with the bottom off. Now you should see quite an accumulation of gunk in there, if it hasn't been cleaned for sometime. Take a stiff stick whatever and wrap a clean towel, meaning shop towel of course, and ram it through there, until clean. Let me know how that helps. I would think if that tractor is used for a reasonable length of time each day, any slight buildup of gas in the oil would be dissipated through the heat from the engine, as I worked with these old girls for a good thirty some years.

As a last resort before going for an overhaul, check your intake manifold gasket. Lots of luck. Jim

Another possibility I've run across several times: Extended light load operation and/or no thermostat (so engine runs cold). Will result in rapid accumulation of of gas and condensation in the oil, especially in colder weather.

If none of Steven's Ideas ork,the you might have to result to checing the piston rings/cylinders for wear. Sometimes they create a lot of blow-by,and if there is enough blow-by, your engine will run,but it will have gas, along with other things in the oil. Just a suggestion. Just go through with this unit in auto shop.

The only place gas could get into the oil on an M is from flooding constantly, fouled spark plugs, or someone intentionally putting it in there. I don't know of any other way to end up with gas in the oil on an M because there is no fuel pump to leak into the crankcase.

How come no one has mentioned the choke here? is it open all the way? is it stuck or binding? Is the exhaust smoke black out the stack, also suggesting a rich mix. A good read of the spark plugs can tell you alot of the story...black, dry,and excessive deposits confirm overfueling. A good valve adjustment never hurts either.

Good point. It could be something much less drastic causing this problem! I've had floats fill with gas which also creates a flooded engine. I punched two tiny holes in each float, blew out the gas, then resealed the original solder and the holes with Seal-All. It lasted for 5 years that way!
