I have been working on this cub and can get no fire. I took the mag off and filed the points and put an new condensor in it. Now when I turn the mag by hand it will fire, but when I put it back on the tractor it would not. I took the mag back off and held the coil wire close to my vice and turned it by hand and could see the spark arcing across. Does anyone have an idea of why it would not fire when I put it on the tractor?

Do you hear the impulsh snap on the mag. when turning over the motor? I had that happen once it needed cleaned for they wouldn`t catch with the speed the starter turned it but worked fine on the bench.

Andy,
Are you absolutely sure the rotor is pointing to one of the plug contacts at the instant the impulse releases? You can tell by marking the outside of the mag, and rotating it with the cap off.

George,

I am not sure that the rotor is pointing directly at a plug contact. When I do this, how do I tell when the impulse is released?

Thanks,
Andy

The rotor will stop, pointing to one of the wire positions, and remain there while the impulse spring winds up. It will make a loud click when it releases and the rotor will jump ahead. Each place it stops should be a contact position in the cap. All this while cranking the engine over slowly.

Andy,
Are you getting spark at the plugs? Just wondering
what condition your wires are in?

Stripped timing gear?

Glenn,

I don't think it is a stripped timing gear because the rotor is turning when I crank the tractor over.

Andy, I think George is right on the money. Had the same thing with my C.Took off the cap and found with the #1 piston up on the compression stroke at top dead center, the rotor was not pointing at the # 1 plug wire on the cap. It was fireing between the contacts on the cap. It's been a while but I think I Got everything set a top dead center and took the rotor off and there is a small gear in there. If I remember right I took it off and turned it on the bench till the rotor would point at the #1 wire on the cap.Put it back together and shazam it worked. I may have left stuff out cause it has been a while since I did this. Sounds like what you have going on. I be Mr. Willer can give some better advice than me. Sounds like he is pretty sharp. When I got the old C it had no wires and the dist. cap was taped on upside down to get it to fire sometimes. Amazeing how jacked up they can be and still work

I would like to thank everyone for your help. I have got the mag firing good now. I think I just need to get the #1 piston on TDC and get the mag back on in the right position and I think it will run. I am learning as I go!

Thanks,
Andy
