I read a post from last year about Elwood front wheel drive axles. I looking for a FWD kit to install on a International 3688. Tried searching on-line thru salvage yards with no luck. Can anyone steer me in the right direction.

I've never heard of an elwood fwd on a 88 series tractor. IH made a good one for that series. On my 5088 fwd the driveline is centered, I've got a 1486 with an elwood fwd and the drive comes off the side of the tranny. Don't use the older IH fwd units unless you've got a hundred acres to turn around. I hope this helps.

the elwood company is who built the fwd on your 5088 just by then tehy had made some diffrent arrangments to it so the driveshaft would coe out centered and not to the side like the older ones(h,m-1586) elwood had more new things to come for ih but by that time ih had been sold to tennco and elwood was bought out. theres only one known true 3688 fwd out there and it was an expermintal. it is owned buy a dairy farmer in Wi i think. it has been rebuilt once and the parts where knda hard to get for it but they got iy rebuilt. just thought i would tell ya.

IH made their own axle for the 5X88 series. The Elwood axle carried over to the 3X88 series as the rearend was basically the same as the 86 series was. Elwood had several different mounting methods thru the time I dealt with them at FARMALL. The later axles pinned right on like the OEM front axle. No extra mounting brackets to bolt on the front bolster. Sure wish I still had the picture of the Hydro 186 FWA Hi-Clear Elwood made for IHC Hinsdale! Talk about RARE! It was disassembled befroe it left ELWOOD's shop! to go back to Hinsdale.
