OK - yesterday's photo showed my Super M at work. Todays shot shows my other tractor - a Super H - pulling a wagon set at the tree farm with my son Scott at the wheel. Bright sun and mild (mild for December in upstate NY anyway...) temperatures brought huge crowds to cut their Christmas trees. Kept us hustling all day...

Bob, Noticed you have the grill covered on both tractors. Do you find that necessary to get the engine to warm up to operating temp on this light duty work? What temperature thermostats do you use? Always nice to see the old iron in "work clothes". I spent 'many' hours on an M growing up in small grain country in North Dakota. They were the favorite of most farmers for pulling grain drills (a typically dusty job) because you sat high and could get away from most of the dust.

Ron - I have 180 deg thermostats in both tractors. They warm up quickly to 180 without winter fronts over the grilles even under light load and cold ambients as is the case with tree farm work. But I've found using winter fronts stops the otherwise cold blast of air from the fan back over the engine. This effectively controls carb icing in damp weather. Also it causes the oil temperatures to run much higher. I'd guess (by feeling the filter can) the oil runs about 120 - 130 deg - vs barely warm to the touch without the winter fronts. This in turn noticably reduces crankcase condensation and sludge buildup inside the motor - a good thing!

Incidentally the drivers prefer the Farmalls over the 2 cylinder tractors because they sit higher on the red tractors. From the H and M seats you can easily see to the back of the wagon without having to stand up - important because there's generally lots of kids aboard and you want to be able to see what's going on at the rear end before you move. The above shot is one of a JD A's pulling a wagon set - you can see the driver is perched a good foot lower than on the Super H.

Hi Paul - I designed, then of my brothers (owns an industrial sewing shop) sewed up those winter fronts for me. Material is a vinyl-coated Cordura(?) nylon with a grommet in each corner. It's held in place with short pieces of shock cord tied thru each grommet and terminated in wire hooks that fit onto the back edge of the grille sheetmetal. The wreath sort of covers it, but there's about a 5" x 10" flap in the bottom center of each cover that's secured with Velcro. When the temp gets to be about 50 deg I gotta peel open that flap to let some air in to the radiator.

I can scan and email you a sketch of the winter fronts if you wish - just let me know. ...Bob M

Mine will be on a C and Super C so the grill will be a lot smaller. I would like to do something like that though

She looks real nice Bob. What paint did you use on the wheels?--they look galvanized.

Hey Bleedinred - those wheels are finished with Rustoleum "aluminum" enamel applied with a brush. Doesn't hold up as well as real galvanizing, but it looks pretty good and the price is right!!

Nice Photo Bob. Wish you could send some of that blue sky out to the left coast. haven't seen any in over a month. Guess that's why we've had 15" of rain and 6" of snow in that time.//FB

Thanks for the compliments FB! That blue sky is HIGHLY unusual for this area this time of the year - gray skies and snow are more normal...
