I went and looked at a farmall 706 and sometimes it seemed like it transmission was slipping while driving it up an incline but on flat ground it was ok. Could it be the clutch or something else. Also it was missing the pto shield are they hard to find? How is the shifting mechanism in this model?

I agree with what Steve says about the '06 series tractors and the TA's. Something to also look into if you buy it is to check the adjustments. Prior to joining the military, I worked in the shops on both farm and construction equipment. You would be surprised of how many of these tractors with TA's slipping were fixed and operated great for many years by making the proper adjustments to the TA linkages.

Shifting is the weak point of the 706/806/1206 tractors. Not too hard to fix though.

As for the slipping, does it have a TA? And was it in low range? If so then the TA is going bad. If the TA wasn't in low range then the engine clutch or the TA clutch could be out of adjustment.
