I'm restoring my Dad's 1940 Farmall A. There is an oblong metal box attached to the steering wheel support column. The box has no face cover, but I assume there might have been a kill switch and maybe a gauge for something mounted there.
My Farmall A manual and parts catalog shows no picture or reference to this "instrument box".

Does anyone have a pic of the intact, complete box or a parts catalog page showing it? Or who knows what it used to contain?

Note: This A has hand crank start. No battery.

Thanks!

Andy

as JIM says no starter no control does your kill sw use the cable to short the mag or is there a sw on the throttle bracket ssome early ones used a cable running to the mag for stopping the engine

If it is hand crank with no battery, there shouldn't be lights or a generator either.* Then the box doesn't belong either. Just remove it.

* Unless it has a no-battery lighting system,, which would be very unusual.

I have to agree with Jem B, he has it figured out. Good luck!

I believe what you are looking at is the amp guage. It tells you how much the generator or alternator is charging the battery. It should also have a small knob on it to turn the lights on and off.

Yes, Micheal is correct.
I just re-painted my 44A.
Also did a re-wiring job.
Are the wires still there?
It is a fairly simple circuit.
Amp guage, and a rotary switch for Hi & low beam lights. The high and low beams are controlled by a resistor wired onto the rotary switch. Try a used tractor dealer.
Ontario Used Tractors near Guelph Ont. is where I shop. Should not be too hard to get.
