A while back I had bought two new mailboxes, One for me one for my neighbor. I also have 6" diam. corregated plastic tubing which I put inside the box. in the void between the box and the plastic pipe I sprayed in an expanding foam, this might work. Ill keep yaall posted.

Once I got so mad at kids stealing pumpkins and smashing them that I decided to do something that made it too easy for them. I filled 3 big pumpkins with concrete and located them on the edge of the road that goes in front of our house. (Speed Limit 45). All of the honest people in the town drove by the innocent looking pumpkins. But not the dumb@$$ teenagers who had been stealing pumpkins. They saw this as an easy target and proceeded to hit my pumpkins at about oh....65-70mph. Needless to say, at 2 in the morning when you hear a boom like that, it wakes you up... It had sheared the steering linkage and tie rods from the front end of their pickup and they had to stop....in the middle of the road...A quick 911 and the kids were in a little trouble, I didn't press charges, I just wanted them to rat out all their friends who had been doing the same thing. It worked....The pumpkin stealing has stopped for the past 2 years. Just a suggestion, I could only imagine the looks on the guys faces when they ran over those pumpkins though....POW!!!...LOL....Merry Christmas!!

I've been thinking of as new angle. Using a cheap cardboard box. You just spray it once in a while with some kind of sealer. If it gets bashed, so what, just go tack a new one on the post.

If I put a card board box out for mail I wouldn't get any mail. Our guy goes by the book , course he also needs a 2 hour window leaway time to deliver. Must have to do a lot of readin along the way or else got a bad hangover from too much pop.

I see a old woman occasionaly on the way home from work in the morning, hobble out to a post and put her mail box on it. It's attached to a can and she slides it down over the post, I guess she waites for the mail and then retrives the mail and box too.It is sad that she has to do that so someone will not take or damage her mail box.

just an F.Y.I
Mailbox bashing is a FEDERAL offense, after all you don't own the box the post office does. you just pay a one time fee when you purchase it.
I know this because a friend once got caught bashing a box (i never saw what was so much fun about it) of course maybe it has the same attraction breaking glass does when you're a teen
best of luck with your concrete boxes

A little story of warning for ya'll; Here in Maryland, about fifteen years ago a gentleman got tired of getting his box mashed by the local high schoolers. To "teach them a lesson" he put the next
one up with a concrete block inside and steel I-beam post. When the boy hit the box he was pulled from the vehicle and subsequently died from his injuries. Now the punch line: The gentleman who "kid-proofed" the mailbox is now in jail. Seems that the mail boxes are in the public right-of-way anytime they are that close to the street, and setting a "booby trap" with intention to harm is illegal. If you look in the postal regulations (atleast around here) it is illegal to put up more than the regular "tin" quality boxes. I know, I know - I still see the ones entrenched in brickwork, and the steel plate ones here too, but that don't mean its legal and safe. Now my box gets whached about once every other year, and each time it happens, I think of that story and figure the $5 bucks for a new box is more "affordable" than a jail term (or a teenagers life).

Sorry to hear about the kid getting killed.

I can understand the "can't booby-trap a mail box" thing, so how about this: build a cage around the box with iron pipe. Fill the pipes driven into the ground with concrete. Paint the cage a reflective fluorescent orange so that the kids will see it at a distance before they try to whack it, and put up a warning sign. They might decide not to try it when they see it. The law can't say that the box was booby-trapped, because it was obvious to everyone that the box is protected. There is still the kid-gets-hurt-and-the-owner-get-sued possibility, but it's a thought.

We just bought one from TSC. It is made of plate steel, has the diamond patter corregation, weighs 20 lbs, and the picture on the box shows a semi tractor rinning over it, (without hurting it)! Costs $59.95, but my guess is that the punks in cars that drive around at 3:00am bashing mailboxes with baseball bats will have trouble with this one (hehehehe). I fondly hope that if the little punk @$#%&*$%@*?!! try and bash THIS one, that the bat bounces off and takes out their rear window. Now THAT'd be funny!

Better have it firmly attached! If they can't bash it, they'll probably just take it with them.
