I followed you alternator swap and it worked great on my cub. Now I would like to swap out the 12v generator with a 12v alternator on my Ford 4500 Deisel Back hoe. Any thoughts on this matter. Beleive it or not I am an electrician by trade but this auto electric stuff gives me fits. Thank you, Bob

Bob - An alternator conversion to your backhoe should be a straight forward swap. Use the same wiring diagram as for the Farmall. Only differences:

1 - Remove the old generator voltage regulator. Then connect the "BAT" terminal on the alternator to the wire that had been connected to "BAT" terminal on the old regulator.

2 - If your Ford already has a generator warning light in the dash, locate the wire running from it to the old regulator. Connect that wire to the alternator #1 terminal.

3 - Since the Ford is a diesel there's no ignition coil, hence no need for a ballast resistor.

If you have a wiring diagram for the backhoe and can post it or email it to me, I will provide more detail if you need it. ...Bob M

Thank Bob M, After I posted this I downloaded all the articles having to do with this swap. I read through it all and started listing all the electrical needs of this machine. From that I will make a schematic. If you dont mind I would like to e-mail it to you and have you check it out. I'll try and give the draws of the items. Thanks you are a real help around here. That swap on my cub was fantastic, Bob.
