Thanks guys! I posted a message a few weeks ago about a Farmall C in which the rear axle could be seen moving in and out ... especially when turning sharp. Well, the responses were right. A round plate with two bolts had come off of the end of the axle. This let the axle slide through the bull gear. I found the round plate and the two bolts in the bottom of the rearend casting. MY QUESTION IS how do I keep the bolts in the end of the axle so they do not come out again like they did before? Use lock tight?? Just tighten them up and they will stay?? Any ideas on what is normal to do here? Thanks andy

You're lucky one of them didn't go through between the bull and pinion, like mine did. That one hadn't loosened, though, the head came right off the bolt, taught me to use new bolts every time. Locktite seems keep them tight. If you ever replace an axle, try to find one of the later ones that uses a snap ring insted of the plate.

The parts manual says these are "self locking" cap screws. IH part No. 221595. So if someone replaced them with a standard bolt, that could be the problem. I'd go to the IH dealer and see if I could get new bolts. The parts manual does not show a locking tab or anything like that to retain the bolts.

As an alternative, you might obtain those cap screws with the hole dirlled through the head and runa wire through the pair of them once tight.
