I went through the tranny and differential this fall on the old H, replaced ten bearings and all the seals. I've got some whine in gears 1-4 and reverse. (5th is fine--that's where the original problem was--pilot bearing I believe). Both of those pinion shaft bearings are new but it sounds like a little more noise than I remember in these things. I filled it with 90wt. and didn't change the ring/pinion setting as it was in the ball park. Any opinions or am I just getting old and crotchety?

My opinion: You're gettin old and crochety....

Seriously, if the tranny whines in 1 thru 4 and reverse but not in 5th, problem's likely with the input shaft/countershaft constant mesh gears. Proof is to put a load on the PTO with the transmission in neutral. If you again hear the whine it's gotta be the constant mesh gearset - since that's the only pair in contact and carrying a load.

Whine could be because the gears are badly worn, or improper shaft spacing is causing incorrect tooth clearance (either too tight or too loose) at the gear mesh.

Hi Bob--I never got to run this tractor before I took it apart since it was shipped dry case. B-in-law said it had a bad grinding sound in 5th, that's why I went in for the pilot bearing. He had attempted to pull the bull pinion cage w/o dropping the bullgears and I found the broken part of the cage in the bottom of the case. Meanwhile, back at the ranch I found most bearings to be real loose or pitted. There was a tooth and a half missing out of third gear so I replaced that with a pretty nice looking 3-4 gearset, thinking I had the world on a string. Do you mean add or remove shims on the (pinion) countershaft? I believe that's the only adjustment there is. Wes

Wes - Unless the input/countershaft gear set are worn out and can be replaced, the only other possibility is to move the counter shaft closer to or farther away from the mainshaft to properly set the gear backlash. I presume that's accomplished by shimming the countershaft bearing(s) to set the gear mesh. But I'm no tranny expert! Perhaps there's someone else here on the board who's had this experience and can share their knowledge.

Good luck!! ...Bob M
