I'm looking for some info on an M highcrop cotton picker tractor. What years were they made? How many were made. Are the chain final drives the same as an MV? What was the correct front tire size? Mine has a 20" front wheel. I have given some thought to selling the chaindrives and front wheel, and putting it back as a regular M, as the tag says M, not MV. (I have a doner) Is there a market for the chain drives? Thanks guys!!

I have been away and havn't been around computer is reason for late reply. The drop housings on high drum pickers contained bull gears, not chain drives. This reversed the operation of the tractor for cotton picker. Low drum pickers did not use the bull gears and had the transmission reversed by installing a reverse transmission top and flipping the differential. This same arrangement with bull gears was used on all high drum pickers from the M (early 40"s) through the 560 (early 60's). Would also work on a 656 but we were not selling one row high drum pickers then. Cotton picker tractors were not MV's. Any M could be made into a high drum picker tractor by changing the rear housings to flange type housings or a low drum picker by installing a reversable transmission top. From the factory, if you ordered a high drum cotton picker tractor ypou got the flange type axle housings and reflective paint under the hood. If you orederd a low drum cotton picker tractor you got the reversable transmission top and reflective paint. The high drum used a 7:50 x 20 tire and the low drum used a 750 x 16 tire.

WOW, what a world of information, thanks folks!! When I bought this tractor, it had the gears allready turned around, and it was being used as a spray rig. I do know that it will FLY in 5th gear. Maybe it's just cause of the heigth. One last dumb question, who publishes a service manual? My I&T books only have a short paragraph or two on the MV's, and nothing on the M cotton pickers. Again, many thanks!! God bless, and have a Merry Christmas!!

No not on high drums they were reversed in offset final drives. I don't know how if they were chain drives. I allways assumed they were gear drives. The low drums had standard axles and had to be reversed by flipping ring gear which required gear shift to be moved to oppositte side and new top deck and shifting rails to be installed.

The cotton picker Ms are really a different tractor than the high clears- I don't know about the chain drives, but the axle flanges are certainly not on other tractors. The cotton picker tractors are probably rarer than the High-Clears. They don't have the V on the serial number, but may have a different suffix code. First ones were probably made in 1942- only about 50 would have been made that year if I remember correctly.

I don't know about the factory models but some were converted from regular Ms by dealers. My dad bought a new high drum picker about 1956 and dealer installed it on M by dad owned. I remember that front tire was 7.00 or 7.50 x 20. I was raised in cotton country and I never saw a high drum picker until mid 50s after Ms were out of production.

was the chunk (planatary gear) turned around so the tractor could travel in reverse in 4 or 5 gears?
