Just had a redone head put on my Super A, and now after I run it, there is steam from my radiator after I shut it off. The mechanic told me that my tractor did'nt have a thermostat and that it was a syphon type radiator, so, is the steam normal? I have no power loss while running, and the exhaust is clear and strong. The compression has definitely increased with this newer head, but the steam has me confused. Any insight will be appreciated.

Have the head bolts been retorqued after the engine was run and heated up? Very important with the C113 and C123 engines in the As and Cs to retorgue them after they have been run a short while and the engine is warm. You'll be surprised how much more the bolts will take up.

I think Gene is right on about the blocked passages.I also would recomend mixing your antifreeze before pouring it in. I dont think the old thermosyphon system is very good a mixing it up like a water pump would be. Call my crazy thats just what I do.

put a thermomenter in the coolant and see what temp it is there probably are more of those old engines running around with the block plugged there are holes in the casting below the sleeves for the coolant to get out the lower passage and to the radiator sometimes i have pulled the rad and the lower casting of the block and then using compressed air and shop vac and pressure water got the passages cleared enough to solve the problem just tore a block down and it was terrible the way it was plugged shut piled at least an inch deep around the sleeves all these holes were plugged solid glad to help let the thermomenter tell you it should run around 170 at the top of the rad glad to help anytime gene b

Thanks for the reply Bob. I will check the radiator and make sure there is an appropriate ratio of water to antifreeze. This makes me feel alot better. Thank you.
