Hi, I have a question about changing over to a 12 volt system. I have received info from you gentlemen about the conversion. My question is does it have to be a certain amp. I am assuming you are talking about a 30 amp. but is a 60 amp. OK if that is all I can find? Also wouldn't I want to change the coil over so there is more voltage between the electrodes on the spark plug? Thank you any help is greatly appreciated.

Bob - About the smallest alternator you'll find in a junkyard anymore will be rated at 55 amps. Back in the early 60's they were made as small at 34 amps, but these are getting hard to find.

Answering your question, any output rating will work for a tractor 12 volt conversion - I have a 63 amp unit on one of mine and it works fine. Don't worry about sending 60+ amps through a 20 amp ammeter - it'll peg the needle every time you start it up, but it won't hurt the ammeter a bit.

Regarding the coil, you can continue to use your existing 6 volt coil on 12 volts so long as you install a ballast (current limiting) resistor in series with the coil primary. Otherwise the coil will draw too much current on 12 volts causing the coil to overheat, and will also greatly shorten breaker point life.

Hope this helps...

Bob M. Thanks a lot this sure helps when I plan to do my converson soon. How about the plugs? If I change the coil over to a 12 volt for more spark at the plugs does it help with any increase with HP?

Bob - A 12 volt coil doesn't provide any different (any "hotter") spark than does a 6 volt coil. Hence changing to a 12 volt coil won't increase your HP. ...Bob M
